Hello! I'm Natasha, an aspiring artist deeply inspired by my cultural heritage and the legacy of my great grandfather and grandma, Percy & Alfreda Bullchild. As a traditional Blackfeet artist and a published writer, Percy Bullchild left an indelible mark on the world with his incredible talent and storytelling. Alfreda was a celebrated fancy dancer that won several awards for her fancy and traditional dances. She was also a mother and grandmother to many. Before Percy Bullchild Came Chief John Two Guns White Calf, the inspiration for the Redskins Football logo And after him came Chief George Bullchild. Their work not only celebrated the rich traditions and history of the Blackfeet Nation but also served as a source of inspiration for countless individuals, including myself.
Growing up, I was surrounded by my grandfather's captivating artwork and stories. His dedication to preserving and sharing our culture instilled in me a profound appreciation for our heritage and a desire to express myself through art. My grandma Alfreda often took care of me while my mother worked, living off and on the Squaxin island reservation. She would often tell me stories of our family and how we had lived in Montana and what is now Alberta, Canada before there were borders. Along with stories of stick people, skinwalkers, and more stories that sparked my interest in other more eccentric parts of our cultures. My journey as an artist began with some beads and a passion for capturing the beauty and essence of our traditions.
My art is a blend of contemporary techniques and traditional Blackfeet elements, reflecting my unique perspective and artistic vision. I strive to honor my grandfather's legacy while also exploring new forms of expression that resonate with today's audience. Most of my work takes hours upon hours of work, with every bead hand sewn by me and me alone. I want to be able to capture the elegance and beauty of my grandmothers dancing within my earrings and pieces. Through my work, I aim to bridge the past and the present, sharing the timeless stories and symbols of the Blackfeet Nation with the world.
As I continue to grow and evolve as an artist, I am excited to share my journey with you. I plan to branch out with my mediums and create ribbon skirts, purses, and other accessories. What I truly hope to do is to inspire others with my art and contribute to the ongoing celebration of our rich cultural heritage. Thank you for joining me on this incredible adventure and for your continued support.
